99% Tert-Butylhydroquinone: A Safe Food Antioxidant?
2026-06-12
What is Tert-Butylhydroquinone?
TBHQ, full name tert-butyl hydroquinone, is a synthetic phenolic Antioxidant, widely used in food, edible oils, cosmetics and industrial materials. Its chemical formula: C₁₀H₁₄O₂.
TBHQ is a widely used food antioxidant worldwide. In China, according to the "National Food Safety Standards - Use Standards of Food Additives" (such as the GB 2760 series), TBHQ is permitted to be used in edible oils, fried foods, baked goods, etc.
What Makes Tert-Butylhydroquinone So Special?
Preventing oil oxidation:TBHQ can Effectively inhibit the rancidity of oils and oily foods (such as chips, biscuits, instant noodles, cooking oil), extend the shelf life and maintain the flavor.
Efficient and stable: Compared to other antioxidants, TBHQ has good thermal stability and high efficiency, and is particularly suitable for high-temperature cooking oils and highly unsaturated oils.
Where to Use Tert-Butylhydroquinone ?
1
Food & Beverage (Largest application, food-grade TBHQ)
Core purpose: Stop oil/fat oxidation, prevent rancid taste, odor, discoloration, extend shelf life
Edible oils & fats: Soybean oil, sunflower oil, palm oil, frying oil, shortening, margarine, ghee
Fried & puffed snacks: Potato chips, crackers, fried dough twists, extruded puffed food
Instant foods: Instant noodles, frozen fried dough, frozen meat pies
Meat & seafood: Cured pork/beef, frozen fish fillets, fish fillings (prevents spoilage & color fading; often blended with BHA)
Nut & seed products: Peanuts, walnuts, almonds, roasted seeds
Sauces & spreads: Salad dressing, mayonnaise, chili oil, butter cream
Bakery goods: Oil-rich pastries, cookies, laminated dough
Regulatory limit: Max 0.02 g/kg (200 ppm) on fat/oil base in most regions (FDA, EFSA, China GB)
2
Cosmetics & Personal Care (Second major market)
Stabilizes plant oils, waxes, fatty bases against oxidation & off-odor
Lip care: Lipstick, lip balm, lip gloss (most common cosmetic use)
Skin care: Facial oils, moisturizing creams, body butter, serums with argan/rosehip oil
Hair care: Hair oil, pomade, hair wax
Makeup: Cream blush, cream eyeshadow, cream foundation
Fragrances & essential oil blends: Prevents perfume deterioration
Typical dosage: ≤0.1% in finished formulas
3
Feed & Animal Nutrition
Protects high-fat animal feed from going rancid during storage:
Poultry, swine, aquafeed, pet food (kibble, wet food with animal fat/fish oil)
4
Pharmaceutical & Nutraceuticals
Stabilizer for softgel capsules (fish oil, CoQ10, vitamin E supplements)
Antioxidant excipient for oil-based liquid medicines, ointments, topical creams
5
Industrial & Chemical (industrial-grade TBHQ only, not for food)
Biodiesel, lubricants, hydraulic oils: Resists oxidative degradation during long storage
Coatings, varnishes, paints, resins, rubber: Prevents polymer aging & auto-polymerization
Organic synthesis raw material: Intermediate to produce BHA, high-molecular polymer antioxidants
Printing ink, petroleum additives
Quick Note on Grades
Food grade: Purified, strict heavy metal/microbe limits for edible, feed, cosmetic, pharma use
Industrial grade: Lower purity, only for coatings, fuel, rubber, chemical synthesis — never consumed or applied to skin/mucosa
Tert-Butylhydroquinone Application
1. Food industry (most common)
Global food safety authorities (FDA, EFSA, GB China) approve TBHQ as a permitted food antioxidant with strict dosage limits.
Max allowed dose in most edible oils & fried foods: usually 0.02 g/kg (200 ppm).
Often mixed with BHA, BHT for synergistic antioxidant effect.
2. Non-food uses
Cosmetics & personal care: Antioxidant for oily formulations, creams, lip products to prevent oil deterioration.
Industrial: Stabilizer for paints, varnishes, rubber, biodiesel to resist oxidation degradation.
