Product Description
Our 1,3-Dihydroxyacetone is a high-purity, cosmetic-grade active produced through fermentation and bio-enzyme conversion of glycerin in compliance with GMP rules. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder with a sweet, fruity odor and is highly hygroscopic. The product is freely soluble in water (>250 g/L at 20°C) and stable at pH 6.0. With an assay of ≥98.0% (by HPLC), heavy metals ≤10 ppm, and compliance with FDA, Canadian Health Ministry, and EU cosmetic regulations, it is ideal for formulating sunless tanning lotions, mousses, sprays, and drops. DHA may be used alone or combined with other tanning components such as erythrulose. INCI name: Dihydroxyacetone. Recommended usage levels: 1–10% for self-tanning, 3–5% for most pharmacy products, 5–15% for special-effect products. Maximum permitted concentration: 10% in tanning products and 6.25% in non-oxidative hair dye products.

Produces Natural-Looking Sunless Tan Without UV Exposure
DHA reacts with free amino groups in the stratum corneum to form melanoidins, creating an orange-brown coloration that mimics a natural tan within 3–10 hours of application. The degree of skin darkening is directly related to DHA concentration (typically 2.5–6.5%), offering a safe alternative to UV-induced tanning.
Provides UVA Protection and Photoprotection
Beyond its tanning effect, DHA application protects the skin against long-wave ultraviolet (UVA, λ > 320 nm) with an UVA protection factor ranging from 1.7 to 2.2, depending on concentration.
